Falling into Autumn

With the Fair finished and gone (tear) it seems that Fall has wasted no time stepping up as being the next big thing to happen. I love this time of year - crisp mornings, just warm enough evenings, football, sweaters, hot drinks, beautiful colors, baking smells...all deliciously irresistible - the list could go on and on. This time of year is also when I get the real itch to jump into more DIY projects than usual. Things like purging the house of all items unused or no longer needed, baking...lots of baking (you have to pack on for winter warmth right?), decorating, moving furniture around, etc. This year I am trying something I have never been brave enough to attempt before - stripping, sanding, and re-finishing/painting furniture!! I am pretty excited. One - its a project and Two - I am going to have "new" furniture in the house!

I started the first project a couple days ago - this lovely table that I found fo' FREE! along the side of the road one day when I wasn't even looking. (Suhweet) I thought it would go great with what I have planned for my sunroom (that which is currently empty minus the dog crate).

My first "to do" - sand it...well I tried (by hand) and thought I was doing good with the little bit of elbow grease I could drum up. But as soon as I dusted it off it was like I had never touched it. Extremely sad face. So I waltzed down the street to borrow an electric sander (I think I'm in love) from the Clarke's (Thank you sooo much!). After about 10 minutes of that I realized I was going to need more than just a sander soooo (again) the Clarke's gave me some stripper! Uhmazing...if you haven't stripped something you should. I think I might strip every piece of furniture I own just to give it a new a refreshed look! Check it out!

Anyway...so this is about as far as I have been able to get with my craftiness. I do have this lovely piece that I scored from the local thrift store that I have grand plans for, so stay posted!

I'll keep you all updated! For now, just a quick hello and happy Fall! I hope this season is as inspiring for you as it seems to be for me :o) What are some of your favorite Fall happenings??

Its time...

...time for the Shenandoah County Fair! As sad as I am that this time of year usually means the end of summer is literally right around the corner and cold weather will be here before you know it, I love love love (one more) love the fair!!! If you are from the area and have any idea what I am talking about you probably already have your tickets in hand and your schedule mapped out. You know exactly where you will be heading for your first taste of fair goodness - Shaffer's for a BBQ platter, the booth second from the right of the grandstand for a funnel cake (extra powdered sugar), down towards the dairy barns for a scoop (or two) of ice cream, the lemonade stand for the biggest reusable cup of fresh squeezed lemonade you can get, or maybe your cup of tea is the new stand where you can get a deep fried Oreo...I'll be having all of it please! I am particularly excited by the fact that Josh Turner will be here to sing a tune (which I will unashamedly join in on even if I do sound slightly, shall we say, "off tune"). And the Derby, oh how I can't get enough of the Derby (caps because it is that important to me). Front row, stage tickets, dirt flying (I'm talking you have to wear protective gear flying), ear plugs because it is so loud, pure awesome. Ahhhh....it all starts tomorrow!!

If you have no idea what I am talking about...shame on you. Seriously, and maybe I am a bit biased, but I think the Shenandoah County Fair is the bees knees people. Check it out, get your tickets, and get there! :0) And if you miss it this year, it's never too early to plan for next year!

Hope to see you all there!

T.V. off = Me on!

Last night I decided I was going to try something different than the usual schedule of wake, work, home, (if I am motivated enough there could possibly be a workout inserted here), eat, blurp of cleaning (usually laundry so there isn't much thought involved) and then veg in front of the TV with the SWL for the rest of the night until I peel myself off the sofa to crawl in bed. Exciting, isn't it? I know.

So, I decided I was going to leave the TV off all night and pay some much needed attention to other tasks around the house. I did some cleaning (yes, beyond laundry so I actually had to think), some organizing, ate dinner with the in-laws, and I even took the time to make a pillow!! I am very excited about this. Cleaning is great and all, but crafting is where its at for me. Its like the pocket protector for avid number cruncher, I get all giddy and ready to take on the world when I get to craft. (Nerdy? Yes...)

Here is my latest project, very beginner but very useful. Anyone could do this! :0)

First, I decided that I needed some pretty simple throw pillows for our living room. Our walls are a medium beige (SW Barley) and we have an accent wall that is blue grey (SW Iron Frost). I tend to use browns, greens, blues, and whites in all my accents around the house. We already have some green throw pillows so I decided to add a little blue on our beige furniture. The fabric I picked up at Wal-mart so if I totally messed up I wouldn't feel guilty. I gathered all my supplies: Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia for Sewing and Fabric Crafts, fabric, sewing machine, ruler and measuring tape, pencil, scissors, pillow form.

I went with the envelope-backed pillow cover. This allows you to change/wash the cover without having to take the cover apart. I simply followed Martha's instructions.

First, I marked and cut my fabric. My pillow form was 12x16 inches so I measured a 13x38 inch rectangle (1 inch extra on the height for seam allowance and multiply the length by 2 and then add 6 inches for allowance as well). When measuring and marking I like to do so with the fabric right-side down. This way you don't need to worry about the marks being seen. Once I measured and marked, I cut out the rectangle. Next, I hemmed the ends of the rectangle (the two 13 inch ends, only). I folded the ends over 1/2 inch and pressed them with the iron, then folded them another 1/2 inch and pressed again. Once the folds stayed in place I ran it through my sewing machine to secure the hem. Martha only suggests a single stitch for the hem, I however am a fan of reinforcement. I ran the hem through the sewing machine twice and back-stitched on the ends (just to be safe).

Once both ends were hemmed I folded them towards the middle of the fabric (now right-side up) and overlapped by 4 inches. Here you should measure to be sure the pillow cover is the correct length for your pillow form (16 inches for me). The height should still be 1 inch more than your pillow form (13 inches for me).
Once I measured and everything was matching up, I pinned the edges to hold them in place while I sewed the hem along the sides. I sewed the hem with an allowance of 1/2 inch on each side. Once again, Martha said hem it once...I sent it through the machine twice and double-stitched the ends.
After both sides were hemmed, I removed the pins (I only stuck myself twice...big accomplishment there) and flipped my newly made pillow cover the right-side out!! The corners like to stay tucked in so I used a closed pair of scissors to push them completely out.
All that is left to do is insert the pillow form and enjoy, yay! Here is the finished product!
I like how the blue of the design on the pillow works with the accent wall but is not overbearing.

Now that I know I can make the simple pillow covers I feel like I can venture into deeper waters...I've already found another little ditty I think I might dive into next...time will tell!

Thanks for stopping by, as always keep any and all creative ideas coming, I would love to hear what you are thinking!

Make me make things

I have the fancy sewing machine, the thread, the ideas, all the fabric I would need, I even bought good 'ol Martha's book (above, its great by the way) all of that.....but I cant seem to get the motivation, find the time, get organized enough to make something! So I thought I would try something new... you, someone, anyone... give me something to make. An idea, a pattern, a color, or even words of inspiration...TELL me to do it! ha! I feel like if I know someone else wants me to make something then I might actually do it, maybe. So let it flow people...please ;-)

Or tell me about a project you are working on, something you have been wanting to make or put together, or even an idea you heard someone else talking about. I'd love to hear about it!
Thanks

Beautiful Photography

For anyone out there who is a fan of great photography you have to look at one of my friends work. Her name is Abby Neese (Hey Abby!) and she takes amazing photos. Recently she did some work for another friend and I found myself looking at the photos over and over again! I couldn't get over the expressions, colors, and perspective captured in the pictures...so much so that I thought, I should share this!! I asked and Abby said sure! She does anything and everything (weddings, babies, senior portraits, family photo shoots, etc.) Here are just a few of my favorites...

There are so many more I could've posted! See what I mean!?! Check her out here... Pictures by Abby or on Facebook search "Pictures by Abby Neese". She is available for travel so if you are looking for someone to capture great memories for you or someone you know give her a call or email her at abigale.neese@gmail.com.

I hope you enjoyed! Happy Monday!

Take the time to smile :0)

Sometimes I find it's easy to get lost in the "do this's" and "don't do that's" of the day to day schedule we create for ourselves. It's easy to become a creature of habit and repetitive motion. For example, each morning I have a routine...a schedule...I have to keep otherwise I wouldn't be able to meet my next scheduled happening of the day. (Now that I am thinking about it, I am actually ashamed to say that I know the exact amount of time it takes me to brush my teeth, to put on my makeup (in the same order every time), to dry my hair, to decide what it is I will be wearing for the day, and the list goes on and on. Am I alone?) I wish it weren't that way. I wish I could wake up chirpy and ready for the day, routine met or unmet, and really be ready to take in the day. Even as I am writing this I am thinking, 'That's what I'll do tomorrow...I'm gonna do it...just get up and go with the flow!' But there is also a small voice saying, 'Yea, right!'.

Ok...I'm ranting...anyway...

So, really my point of this post, as mentioned in the title, is to share something what made me smile this evening. As usual, I had my plans all worked out, I knew exactly what I was going to be doing and I even made a list to check off. It all started wonderfully...and then I changed my mind. I stressed for a split second and then I decided to go with the flow of the evening and see what happened. Even though I didn't get the 50 loads of laundry done that were on my list (no, really...you should see my laundry room I'm pretty sure there are close to 50 loads down there) and I didn't vacuum, dust, clean windows, etc...I survived the night and even better than if I had done all those things. Because I decided I would run with what presented itself to me I was able to spend time with a couple great friends over supper (BIG SMILE there) and I was able to catch up with another great friend later on (another BIG SMILE).

Sometimes just letting life unfold and taking the time to set your "list" down is totally worth it. I know lists are necessary at times to make smiles happen, but I guess what I just realized is that you can't let the list create blinders for the "smiles" that are already there waiting to happen. Whether it is something waiting to make you smile or something you might do to make someone else smile.

I know in about a week (probably more like a day) I will be totally reverted back to list making and schedule keeping...but I hope I will be more able to notice all the little things that are there waiting to bring out smiles.

What about you? Have you been wearing "blinders"? What is something you have been meaning to do or say to someone else that would make them smile? Maybe its something as simple as giving someone a call after so many years to say, "Hey." or taking the time to send someone a letter who wouldn't expect it. Maybe its realizing you do need a break to watch the sun set with a glass of wine or finding time to read that book you have been wanting to dive into. It's not an easy task with all the pressures and demands of what surrounds us...but I hope this post helps you to find the time to create your own smile or pass one on. :0)

xoxo
